UNDERGRADUATE AND ​GRADUATE STUDENTS

PRCEN student fellowship
​

Only full-time students that are U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents, and are enrolled in a pertinent academic graduate program from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), or in our educational partner, the Metropolitan University (UMET) are eligible for the program fellowships. A minimum of a cumulative 3.0-grade point average (GPA) in the bachelor´s degree and in the applicable graduate program are required.  

 

Students interested in applying need to identify a principal investigator (PI) who is willing to sponsor them. Students sponsored by Participating PIs will have a preference, but student application with a sponsoring PI who is submitting a self-initiated project with a strong environmental and neuroscience component that fits into the PRCEN aims and objectives will receive full consideration.

 

The participating PI will need to write a recommendation letter for each sponsored student with a short description of the research project in which the student will participate, highlighting how it fits into the aims and objectives of the PRCEN. Applications by non-participating PIs should present more comprehensively the research project (abstract, specific aim page, research strategy, available resources...)  that will have to be approved by the scientific committee prior to any decision by the educational committee about the student's admission into the fellowship program.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students

All fellows must:

  • maintain a minimum of a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in all pertinent academic program courses, as well as demonstrate satisfactory progress in all courses.  It is the fellow’s responsibility to inform the Education Director if the GPA falls below this minimum, by submitting a copy of an official transcript at the end of each academic session.

  • fill an annual Progress Report following a standardized format, no later than August 1 of each academic year. Each sponsoring PI will also briefly report (on official letterhead) by the same date about the progress of each of his/her sponsored student(s) and on the research that was performed by the student during the sponsored period.

  • participate in all the activities organized by the program or by the fellows is mandatory, including:

    • ​Conferences and lectures by invited speakers

    • Introductory Series to Environmental Neuroscience (ISEN) course of the Program (1 credit)

    • Outreach activities organized for the community and K12 schools

    • Local or national Workshops

All students are expected to self-organize and manage the logistics throughout the academic year of monthly scientific meetings, featuring short oral research presentations by students (open to all participating PIs). Each fellow should present at least once a year in such Workshop series of their choice with invited outside speakers
